The once pleasant alliance between Russia and France began to fall apart in 1811. Tsar Alexander was facing pressure to
break off the alliance with Napoleon, as he was gaining power at a dangerously rapid pace. Russia was also slacking on the
enforcement of the Continental System and was also showing implied interest in overtaking Poland, perhaps even invading France.
Napoleon decided to invade Russia, against the suggestions of his advisors. He wanted to showcase France’s strength
to the rest of Europe.
Although he won many battles, Napoleon was forced to leave Russia due to the Russian climate, the lack of resources for
his army and out of fear of losing power back in France.
